When Cheryl Jackson joined TVO in 2007 to host a brand new “web” show, she didn’t know where it would lead. Jackson says, “I wasn’t even sure what that was when I arrived. What a long way we’ve come.”
Today, that web show has evolved into a content-rich, one-stop resource where parents can go for very focused information on their children’s learning and development. TVOParents.com helps parents understand children’s social and emotional issues, brain development, the school system, curriculum, and milestones to expect at different ages. Everything that affects a child at school and his or her ultimate success can be found on this comprehensive site.
TVOParents.com is now fully integrated with TVOKids.com and shows users how every TVOKids program or game addresses the Ontario school curriculum. The site offers an extensive video library, audio podcasts, blogs, and feature articles. It also gives users access to essential tools like the TVOKids Homework Zone.
In Jackson’s view, TVOParents.com plays a unique role for parents and caregivers seeking resources on child development and learning. “Parents want and need this information and we make it easy for them to find it. We also know that grandparents, teachers and other care-givers go to our site for information. There are lots of people in kids’ lives. The more we all understand kids, the better life will be for kids.”
What is the most important piece of advice Jackson can give parents on becoming engaged in their child’s learning? “I would say parents should try to find out as much as they can, as early as they can about how their child develops and learns so they can be active players in their child's learning. It all starts the day your child is born.”
